Composites Materials
| >Table of contents Print |
It is a growing sector as composite materials are being more and more used by naval construction, automotive and aeronautics companies.
| | | | | | In the field of composites, you can find in Western France: 2 Competitive clusters for materials and polymers, a research and technology platform for composite materials, a business convention meeting on composites, a research and center of studies, industries and training centers.
|
Nantes has become one of the three EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space) European Centres of Excellence in the field of composites : it is the leading site for the aeronautics group in composite structural parts subjected to severe mechanical stress. The Nantes site is highly strategic in that 25% of the A380 is built of composite materials and the future A350 will be constructed using 50% composite materials. The EMC² competitive cluster for materials combines differents sections of the mechanics industry in the implementation of metallic and composite materials in industry.
Its aim is to create synergy between groups of international stature, small and medium enterprises, research laboratories and private and public training centres, as well as any industrial collaboration through the organisation of mutually organised R&D projects.
It comprises 80 SMEs/SMIs, 50 laboratories, training centres and economic development organisations. Around 30 projects are certified and financed each year. |
Elastopôle is the Rubber and polymers competitiveness cluster and aims at harnessing the strengths of industry, science and universities in the rubber and polymer industry, within a framework of collaborative projects. The goal is to promote business and employment through innovative technological developments covering the whole product life cycle : Raw materials, Applications, Process, Environment. |
| A research and technology platform |
The research and technology platform Technocampus EMC² focuses its work on high performance composite materials for large-scale parts.
The site includes 300 individuals, a CETIM centre of expertise on composites, industrial facilities providing means of manufacturing, and an area dedicated to training.
The infrastructure allows for full-scale testing of parts, the production of functioning prototypes and for progression to the industrialisation stages of aeronautics industry parts as well as naval and automobile construction.
The enterprise partners carry out their R&D pre-industrialisation projects in borrowing skills and equipment from the Technocampus EMC². |
| A state-of-the-art resource center for studies of composite materials |
It is the CEMCAT (Centre d'Etudes sur les Matériaux Composites Avancés pour les transports), the Centre for studies of advanced composite materials for transport. It works on carbon fibre manufacturing processes.
The center has direct links to major automotive manufacturers, and its expertise includes the transformation of fibreglass and carbon fire reinforced materials (heat-hardening and thermo-plastic materials) | - High-performance composites for aeronautics: Airbus, Daher Aerospace, Hexcel Composites, Duqueine Atlantique
- Mass-produced composites for the automotive industry: Sora Composites
- Composites for "general distribution" (water sports, leisure vehicles, etc.): Bénéteau, King Cat, Plasticon, Plastima
- Design offices, Mould makers and specialists : Ajilon Ingénierie, CD Plast, Allio, Jallais, Europe Technologies
|
| - Engineering schools : Ecole Centrale de Nantes, Ecole des Mines de Nantes, ENSAM in Angers, ENSIM in Le Mans, ESB in Nantes, ESTACA in Laval, ECAM in Nantes, ISMANS in Le Mans ....
- The Nantes Atlantique School of Design
